My member’s project will be up at Struts until its reception this Saturday, the 23rd, at 8pm! </p> <div>I will be exploring a humorous form of (monoprint) printmaking and self-portraiture, in which I will put on a heavy application of makeup, exercise on a treadmill, and make a print of the melted makeup on a white towel, which will then hang from the wall. </div> <div></div> <div>Anyone interested in making prints of their made-up faces after running on the treadmill are welcome to do so. Makeup is provided.</div> <div><br/>I am interested in the remnants of the activity, the towels, more than the performance of running in makeup.</div> <div>The idea came from a memory of running in full pancake make up at a cross country running event in middle school. From a second floor window in downtown Sackville, I did all of my dealings with pedestrians using a rope tied to a bucket. <br/>The bucket said “Draw Something and get a SURPRISE” or “The Fortune Teller is IN”. When I was trading drawings for felted surprises, the bucket contained a pad of paper, a pen, and a bell to ring for service. When I was giving out fortunes, the bucket just the bell in it.<br/>When the participant rang the bell, I would pull up the bucket and put in a felted object or fortune.</p> <p>The project was incredibly enjoyable, and brought some novelty and cheer to my Winter blues. People who engaged seemed excited by the results, as well! My favorite of the party noise maker fortunes was “A BEAR FOLLOWED YOU ONCE” and “MAKE NEW FRIENDS” (which could be your typical cheesy fortune advice or ominous…). The writing on the dog figurine’s leg said “THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM”. </p> <p>The project was incredibly enjoyable, and brought some novelty and cheer to my Winter blues. People who engaged seemed excited by the results, as well! We got access to a space in town from the awesome owners of the Black Duck Inn. We moved a lot of furniture, put in a tinsel curtain, hung up art, got some cute balloons, cut a sign out of vinyl for the window, and had a successful, PACKED event! EVERYONE in the third year BFA program contributed to the zine, and put in an artwork for the show. I was giddy with joy.
